Every week in my clinic in Dwarka, someone tells me, “Ma'am, I think I have anxiety” — but what they really have is stress. And many people with real anxiety say, “it's just some stress.” In my 14+ years of work, I have seen that knowing the difference matters a lot. It decides what kind of help you need and how fast you get better.
What is Stress?
Stress is a response to an external pressure — a deadline, an argument, a difficult situation. It is your mind and body reacting to a specific challenge that feels bigger than your current resources. Stress has an identifiable source. When that source goes — the stress usually goes too. You finish the project and the tension eases. Stress is situational.
Physical signs of stress include muscle tension, headaches, irritability, difficulty sleeping, and feeling overwhelmed. These are all normal responses to a difficult situation.
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is different. It does not need a specific trigger. It is a persistent state of worry, fear, or unease that continues even when the obvious stressor is no longer present. Anxiety lives in the future — in the 'what ifs.' It is the racing mind at 2am when nothing is actually wrong.
Unlike stress, anxiety does not simply resolve when circumstances improve. It can persist, intensify, and expand to affect more and more areas of life over time.
Key Differences
| Stress | Anxiety |
|---|---|
| Has a clear, identifiable cause | Often has no clear cause |
| Resolves when the situation resolves | Persists beyond the situation |
| Present and future-focused | Primarily future-focused |
| Temporary in nature | Can become chronic |
| Normal and universal | May indicate a disorder |
When Does Anxiety Need Professional Support?
If anxiety is affecting your sleep, your relationships, your work, or your ability to enjoy daily life — it has moved beyond normal worry. Signs that anxiety may need support include persistent worry you cannot control, physical symptoms with no medical cause, avoidance of situations due to fear, panic attacks, and sleep disturbances.
The good news: anxiety is one of the most treatable mental health conditions. With CBT, EMDR, or other evidence-based approaches — most people experience significant improvement.
What You Can Do Right Now
- Name it — labelling the feeling 'this is anxiety, not danger' reduces its intensity.
- Breathe deliberately — slow breathing (4 counts in, 4 hold, 4 out) activates your parasympathetic nervous system.
- Ground yourself — the 5-4-3-2-1 technique brings you back to the present moment.
- Move your body — even a 10-minute walk reduces cortisol significantly.

A note from my practice: Most people who come to me spend months thinking their anxiety is just stress, waiting for it to go away on its own. If your worry stays even after your problems are solved, it is not your fault. It is a sign — and with the right help, it gets better.
