Almost everyone is nervous before their first session with me. Later, many people tell me what they had imagined — that I would judge them, or ask painful questions right away, or make them lie on a couch and cry. The truth is much simpler and much more comfortable. Let me tell you exactly what happens in a first session with me.
Before You Arrive
You do not need to prepare. You do not need to have your thoughts organised. You do not need to know exactly what is wrong. Come as you are. That is enough.
When You Arrive
The consultation room is warm and quiet — two comfortable chairs facing each other, a small table with water, tissues, and a plant. No clinical whiteness. No clipboards pointed at you. No couch to lie on. Just a private, calm space.
What We Talk About
The first session is simply a conversation. Ms. Shilpi will ask you what brought you here. You can say as much or as little as feels right. Nothing is too small. Nothing is too much. She will ask some questions to understand your background and what you are hoping to achieve. But mostly — she listens.
What You Will NOT Experience
- You will not be judged
- You will not be told what to do
- You will not be given a diagnosis in session one
- You will not be pressured to return if you do not want to
- You will not be given homework you do not agree to
How You Will Feel Afterwards
Most people describe feeling lighter after their first session. Not because anything has been solved — but because they finally said something out loud. To someone who truly listened. That is often the beginning.
A note from my practice: Almost everyone tells me after their first session, “this was much easier than I thought.” Yours will be too.
