After sessions, people often ask me: “Ma'am, therapy ke alawa main roz kya karoon?” I love this question. Therapy does the deep work, but small daily habits protect your mental health every day. Here are the five habits I suggest most often in my practice — not because they are fashionable, but because I have seen them actually work.
1. Move Your Body Every Day
Even 10 minutes of walking reduces cortisol, increases endorphins, and improves sleep. Exercise is one of the most consistently evidenced mood regulators available — and it is free. You do not need a gym or a routine. You need to move.
2. Protect Your Sleep
Sleep is not a luxury. It is the foundation of emotional regulation, memory, immune function, and mental health. Chronic poor sleep is directly linked to anxiety and depression. Protect your sleep hours the way you protect your most important appointment.
3. Have One Honest Conversation Daily
Not a performance. Not a summary of your day. One genuine exchange with another human being where you say something true about how you are doing. Connection is one of the strongest predictors of mental wellbeing.
4. Limit Passive Scrolling
Your nervous system absorbs everything you feed it. Thirty minutes of doom-scrolling before bed is neurologically equivalent to drinking a cup of anxiety before sleep. Set a boundary with your phone — not for productivity, but for your peace.
5. Do One Thing for Yourself
Not for productivity. Not for your family or your career. One thing — a cup of tea in quiet, a book for ten minutes, a walk without your phone — purely because it restores you. This is not selfish. This is what makes everything else possible.
These habits will not replace professional support when it is needed. But practised consistently, they build the kind of daily resilience that makes everything — including seeking help when you need it — a little easier. A note from my practice: The biggest change happens not in people who do all five habits perfectly, but in those who do two or three of them regularly. Start small. Doing a little every day works better than doing a lot once.
